Zheshan Scenery Area is located north to Jiuzi Square, a landmark of the downtown area of Wuhu City, with Anhui Normal University(Zheshan Campus)in between. Zheshan Park is the center of Zheshan Scenery Area, with neighboring tourist destinations such as Guangji Temple, Luhe Village Tea House and Art Museum sporadically scattered around the Zheshan Hill. According to a legendary story, Gan Jiang, a famous swordsmith from the Wu State during the Spring and Autumn Period, used to refine swords nearby and burnt the soil of the hill into red. That is how the name of “Zheshan” (literally meaning red hill in Chinese) comes from. Zheshan Hill consists of two parts: Small Zheshan in the north and Big Zheshan in the south. Both hills, not too high, are well-designed with lush trees and flowers, making the park a wonderful place for many locals to do morning exercises. The park is also a paradise for children as there are many amusement projects and a zoo in it.
Zheshan Park has four entrances: east gate, west gate, south gate and Cuiming Garden gate. In addition to enjoy beautiful scenery, tourists can have fun in the amusement projects, or tour around in the zoo with many animals like tigers, bears and peacocks. It’s free to enter the park, but the amusement projects and the zoo require tickets, ranging five to ten yuan. On the top of Small Zheshan is seated Wuhu TV Station Transmission Tower, while on Big Zheshan are scattered some historical sites such as Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on the hillside and Yilan Pavilion on the top built in Jiajing Period of Ming Dynasty. Besides, standing on the top of the hill and looking westward, one can see the zigzag Yangtze River hanging on the horizon and cannot help marveling at the natural wonder.
For those tourists fond of visiting museums, Huishang Museum, located on the north side of the east gate of Zheshan Park, is a place that cannot be missed. Its collections include essentially “Three Carvings of Huizhou” (stone carving, brick carving and wood carving) and celebrities’ calligraphies and paintings of various dynasties. The Museum is also known for various layouts of nozzles, ancestral halls, pawnshops, Chinese medicine shops, Flower Peking Opera Theater and so on. Another place worth visiting is Luhe Village Tea House and Art Museum, located on the south of Zheshan Park. It is not only a leisure house for drinking tea, but also a Huizhou-styled building with many collections of Three Carvings of Huizhou.
Next to Luhe Village Tea House and Art Museum is Guangji Temple at the foot of Big Zheshan, an ancient temple with a history of more than 1,000 years. Guangji Temple is also known as “Small Jiuhua”, where Buddha Ksitigarbha has been worshiped. What’s particularly conspicuous about the Guangji Temple is the Zheshan Tower (also known as Guangji Tower). Seated in the backyard of Jiuhua Palace with five stories, the Tower was built as early as the second year of Zhiping Period in Song Dynasty(1065 AD), witnessing the vicissitudes of Wuhu City over one thousand years.
In addition, scenic spots such as Cuiming Garden, Yueji Garden and Dujuan Garden are unique in their architectural styles and natural beauty, adding to the splendor of Zheshan Scenic Area. The west gate of Zheshan Park is connected with Fenghuang Food Street, where dozens of restaurants offer both Huizhou cuisine and mouthwatering food from across China.
